Auberge du Soleil: Classy and discrimination

Posted in Travel on 12.07.11

The very French-sounding Auberge du Soleil Resort is actually in the Napa Valley in California. It was started almost three decades ago by well-known restaurateur Claude Rouas. Today it has evolved as one of the best spa hotels that dot the globe. The restaurant was a tribute by its owner to the wine region of Provence in France. Little wonder that he chose to establish his dream project in the heart of vineyard country. Among the spas and resorts present the world over the Auberge du Soleil probably has the greatest reputation in terms of muted glamour and 'responsible' hospitality.

When the restaurant was first opened in 1981 it became an instant hit with the discriminating public. Its classy décor and different-tasting cuisine with French and Mediterranean influences won all-round appreciation. A growing clientele encouraged Rouas to expand his dream project and in 1985 he and his partner, Robert Harmon, opened the inn introducing an amalgam of the overlaid Californian-styled architecture and design with subtler hints of Provence. This time the discerning public raced to the Napa Valley in hordes. The foundation of a luxury spa resort was already underway.

The inn won instantaneous applause from critics, diners, and the laity who variously ' and glowingly ' described it as 'a masterpiece' and 'discreet and elegant'.

Today, some 28 years on, the Auberge continues to glitter with the vivacity of all the Renaissance elements that became its raison d'être. Today it is reckoned among the best spa hotels in the world.

Great views with well-designed accommodation are the vaunted boast of this luxury spa resort. Intrepid and audacious designs, sumptuously braided beds, ottomans, and lounges and bedcovers of cream matelasse are the hallmark of guest rooms also called 'maisons'. The fabric of the upholstery is custom-designed by Margeuroy, a subsidiary of Pierre Frey in Paris.

Of all the spas and resorts in the world there is probably none that recalls delightful cuisine as much to the mind as Auberge du Soleil. A famous culinary spot its offerings are unique and splendid. Its flagship restaurant opens for breakfast at 7 am and closes at 9.30 pm for dinner. Sit on its terraced gardens and enjoy a marvelous view of the surrounding vineyard and olive groves as you sip your wine while nibbling on cheese and al fresco.

The wine list at the Auberge is pretty daunting, with over 1300 selections arranged as per species of grapes and regions. A trained staff is available near at hand to advice guests with regard to wine selection. If you happen to check into the Auberge Bistro and bar you will get wine by the glass with a choice of over 25 wines. The bistro opens for lunch at 11 am and goes on for the next 12 hours.

Don't forget to visit the Auberge Spa and soak in its unique treatment and oil massages. The menu that includes indigenous ingredients is designed to give its guests the ultimate pampering pleasure. There are seasonal menus as well as fitness classes, among a range of wonderful surprises. The Auberge Resort is designed to delight.
