This second Android phone from T-Mobile is no doubt, an upgrade from their previous effort. The T-Mobile myTouch 3G is an improvement, there is no arguing that; the argument then becomes, how much of an improvement is it from its predecessor? From this initial review, it seems the answer is, enough.
Basically the Same Phone
The new T-Mobile myTouch 3G is basically the same mobile phone as the G1 with a few upgrades here and there. It comes with a 320 x 480 pixel display on a 3.2' screen that is identical to the G1. It also features the same 3G radio (HSUPA 2 Mps, HSDPA, 7.2 Mbps) as the previous attempt as well as the same processor but fortunately, it has double the memory at 512 MB. It also has WiFi and Bluetooth capabilities much like its predecessor.
The T-Mobile myTouch 3G also comes with the same 3.15 megapixel camera with auto focus. This camera feature allows for the same type of experience since it also has video recording and YouTube upload capabilities but unfortunately, and annoyingly, the same no flash feature seen in G1.
Take out all the frills and random upgrades and what you get is basically the same phone as the G1. This is not at all bad since the G1 is a pretty decent phone and would have been at the top of the smartphone market had it not been for that little device from Apple called the Iphone.
Where It is Different
Of course the T-Mobile myTouch 3G does have some pretty significant changes, the most obvious of which is the hardware. First of all, this new Android phone is thinner and smaller as compared to the G1 since it no longer has a physical QWERTY keyboard. This was replaced by a virtual keyboard thanks to the Android 1.5, which is endearingly known as cupcake. It also comes in two new colors, black and merlot.
Other upgrades include the improved battery life of the mobile phone; from the G1's talk time of 5 hours and 20 minutes, to this Android phone's upgraded 7 hours and 30 minutes. This mobile phone also supports Microsoft Exchange. It also has the ingenious Sherpa application, which allows this smartphone to get to know you and your actions and provide recommendations on different things based on this information.
The Verdict
It is obvious that this mobile phone is not a new mobile phone, merely an updated version of an old one. But how bad can it be when it is upgrading one of the more underappreciated smartphones in the market. The major flaw of the G1 was that it was released on the same time period as the Iphone, which it was no match against.
With this effort, however, there is a shot. The T-Mobile myTouch 3G is going to give the Iphone a run for its money. It may still not be the Iphone-killer that the industry has been looking for but it will surely have more of an impact than its forerunner. It may not be a better phone than the Iphone but at least it's better than the G1 and for some people that should be enough.
